When I was younger I used to hear people say that they were “God fearing” people. A teacher of mine once asked me if I was a God fearing person and I honestly did not know how to respond. So I said “no.” Then she said, “What?! You don’t fear God?!” Guessing that this wasn’t the response she was looking for, I quickly changed my answer. “I mean, yea I fear God! I thought you said something else.” I believe I was in the 4th grade when this happened. Talk about being confused! I was always taught that fear was a negative emotion. I was also taught that viewing God in a negative way was blasphemous and a one way ticket to hell. But like any child, or adult for that matter, I didn’t ask any questions and just went along with whatever my authority figure told me. But one question always stuck with me throughout my childhood and adolescent years: Was I supposed to love God or fear Him?

Alot of you might be saying that the answer is simple; both! But how is it possible to love something with all of your heart but fear it at the same time. I once heard a preacher use an analogy where he compared God to your biological father. He said “you love your father of course, but you were afraid of the consequences if you didn’t do what you were supposed to do.” But you aren’t necessarily afraid of your father as much as you are of the punishment that came along with doing wrong. Because if you’re truly and honestly afraid of your father, then there is no way you could truly and honestly love him. Many people confuse fear with love. People will do anything out of fear… even say “I Love You”

Many people would point to the bible as a reference to show God’s wrath and fury if you disobeyed him, and they would also use the same bible to show how much he loved you if you lived according to his will. The way I see it, if you truly loved God you would have no reason to fear him because you would do whatever it took to stay in his good graces because you loved him that much… but that doesn’t seem to be the case. The main reason people do what they do, as far as obeying God, going to church, and doing whatever the bible says, is because they are trying not to go to hell! They fear that God will send them to hell if they didn’t do it, not because they love Him. Also, people think if they don’t love Him then they’ll be sent to hell. The reason people love God the way they do is because they fear him! Paradoxical and ironic!

Now lets move on to another topic that always intrigued me. The personification of God. Jealousy/envy and wrath. Traits of God or traits of Man? When used in association with a human being they are two of the seven deadly sins. But when used in association with God they are evidence of His power, and His dire need of our love. I was taught to believe when I was little, like many Christians, that Man is born with Original Sin. That we are born unworthy. And life is all about pleasing God. I was taught that there was no way we could be perfect, but we could strive for perfection by obeying the word and following God’s only begotten son Jesus the Christ. I’m not knocking anyone’s religious views. I’m just saying its a little confusing. If we’re not suppose to be wrathful, or envious, or vengeful towards our fellow man, having a God that does the same wouldn’t make any sense. You might be saying, “Well, he’s God he can do that.” But in a sense, using that as an excuse would give us an excuse to do the same. “Since my God is wrathful, and envious, and vengeful, then that must mean its not that bad of a sin.” I’m sure people don’t actually say that out loud but on a subconscious level it has an affect. Which is why I believe there have been so many wars in the name of religion; because their violence is justified by some verse in the Bible or Koran. Its sorta like when a parent says “do as I say and not as I do.” Kids are gonna do whatever they see their parents do.

Now I’m not denying the existence of an omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent force that is the source of all creation. Whatever you choose to call it, it exists. I’m just saying that instead of realizing that we were made in It’s image, we tend to make It into our image. Maybe this idea of God that we have has been forced upon us by the various world religions. Maybe this idea of God that we have only exists in our mind. Maybe God lives within us but we just don’t realize it. Maybe we are all gods but we’re just too afraid of what that might in tel. Because that would mean that everything that happens to us is of our own doing and we’re not ready for that type of responsibility. Because it would be a whole lot easier if we just assumed that some white guy with a long white beard is sitting up there controlling everything and in order for things to go our way we have to pray to him and give him 10% of everything we own.

In fact, it almost baffles me how we can say we want something SO BAD. We want this house. We want to be successful. We want this new car, recognition, marriage and we want this type of income, yet damn near barely ANYONE...LIVES THEIR LIFE LIKE THEY ACTUALLY MEAN IT. We all walk around acting as if we've got freaking FOREVER to live our lives.

We get easily upset with our love ones, but yet we never take the time to figure out why? because we act like we've got forever to live...We bumble through our jobs not really knowing what our purpose is and just getting complacent more and more each day because we act like we've got forever to live...We half ass our way through challenges, we avoid pain and we seek pleasure because we act like we've got forever to live. Well... I want to introduce an idea to you today and ask you to take it very seriously. The real reason I'm wrote this blog... Is because I am not here to show people how to govern their life. In fact, I could care less about that. I want your life to succeed INCREDIBLY and create your DREAMS in life... but showing people how to govern their life is not my purpose in life. I'm here to help you remember just how powerful you are and motivate you to really QUESTION what your specific purpose is here in life.

We've got ONE CHANCE. You do not get to repeat today. It's done. And you will not get to repeat tomorrow. That's done to. So why not live this life with our full BEING. Why not live this life with as much love, as much care, as much passion, and COMPASSION as we possible can ? Why not discover what our purpose is while we are on this planet?

Why not go after OUR GOALS and OUR DREAMS in life like we will NOT get a second chance tomorrow? I ask you... why not? Can any one give me one good "F$#@ING" reason ? The only reason is FEAR, laziness, and plain apathy. We've spent to long complacent, and I'm merely inviting us ALL, myself included, to take action steps Now to STOP it.

Many of you might have already said good bye to some of the people you love the most in the world. Yet we easily forget that 'We won't live forever'. We easily slip back into the frame of mind... where it's 'ok' to half ass our way through things because we got the rest of our lives to figure it out.

Their advice, although backed with their reasons of validity, somewhat shocked me. “R&B is dead, and no one will ever look your girls way if you release them as an R&B group” It was suggested that I listen to Rhianna, and Beyonce, and Nikki Minaj and create Pop songs like “S&M” and “Bass Boom”. This is after I played songs that were deemed “fire”, “hot”, and a “hit” but countered with “Radio won’t play it”, “the public doesn’t want to hear that”, “a Label won’t touch them sounding like that”. They even added that “Rap has been redefined as an edgier Pop thanks to artists like Drake”, and “You won’t find a Black artist that will claim being an R&B or Rap artist nowadays, not if they want to blow up, with Radio support and endorsements”. The foundation of Damozel is R&B. They were brought up inspired by the Jodeci’s, 112’s, Dru Hill’s, SWV’s, and every other R&B great that you can imagine. How can an entire genre of music that at one time defined and guided other music genres be obsolete? Have Black artists sold out to stay relevant? I ask you all, seriously, Is R&B dead? And if it is, why am I the last person to find out about it?"

I remember hearing your music and thinking how good it was, your group reminded me of Total. I am reaching out because people post so fast and so often in this group that I often don’t get a chance to read what everybody has posted, luckily I get them in my personal e-mail in-box as well so when I get a chance I go back and read some of the older posts and after reading your post just now I had to respond… First off, Its individuals in the game like that that halts the progression of our music. R&B IS FAR FROM DEAD!!! There are several R&B artists that are enjoying great success right now – JILL SCOTT, KEM, LEDISI, CHARLIE WILSON, MARSHA AMBROSIUS, MUSIQ SOULCHILD, KELLY PRICE, ANTHONY DAVID, JENNIFER HUDSON and R. KELLY just to name a few, and there are several more R&B artists signed to Major and Independent Label deals that are in regular rotation on the radio, selling on ITunes, climbing the chart and performing all across the country…I believe the sound of Damozel fits in right along with everyone I’ve named. Understand this, the music industry is plagued by individuals who couldn’t hear a hit if Mike Tyson landed one right on their ear! The people telling you and your group to listen to and be more like Rhiana, Beyonce and Nikki Minaj are the same people who passed on Drake because at the time EVERYBODY was looking for the next Lil’ Wayne…Then Drake’s music blows up…Next Lil’ Wayne signs him…NOW EVERYBODY WANTS THE NEXT DRAKE!!! This business is full of %$#@# riders so please don’t change for them. Because radio was overrun by Hip-Hop sounding R&B at the time Alicia Keys first single was a Hip-Hop influenced cut called “Girlfriend”…This single did nothing on my station or any other station in the country. It was a downright flop...But, Clive Davis believed in her project and so did the entire staff at J records. After quickly rethinking their strategy and going back to the drawing board they decided to push Alicia Keys doing what she does best – Soulful R&B and came back with the second single – The R&B Super Smash “Fallin”! This was a single that cut through all the noise and launched her into the music stratosphere…True; in the current world of Mainstream Urban Radio it is all about Beyonce and Nikki Minaj right now. Why do we run from the promises of God? FEAR

We run away from what seems familiar and we never stick around to see how God will bless us. We are so afrad of what looks familiar, sounds similar, and feels like something we use to know, that we run... not knowing first how God has changed us. We are so in tuned with the phrase "if it looks like a duck and walk like a duck, it is a duck!" Never applying the measure of faith that God teaches us in His word.

What if through faith, through prayer, and our words of faith that God teaches us, we are able to change what seems and looks familiar. What if you, just by happen chance, could actually hear Gods voice and He is telling you "I know what it looks like, I know what it sounds like but if you just trust Me, what appears to be a duck is actually a swan!" Would you run?
Instead of giving fear a home to rest within, stand firm on the word and promise of God, for at your weakest He is what makes you the strongest! Condition and exercise your mental capacity to ignore the carnal mind and rely on your spiritual mind.
Running indeed seems much easier. Running puts on the illusion that if I run far enough and hard enough, I am protecting myself from hurt and disappointment. Running makes you "think" that you are in control when actually you are cowarding away! We have to learn and practice turning the direction of our run, we shouldn't be running away, we should be running to!!!

I write this today because I have been struggling. I went to my Father and He sent Angels to comfort me. He woke me up this morning and reminded me of those things that He recently said to me and and now this. I am not sure who this if for, but as I write, I am also ministering to myself. My friend(s), we can make it if we can hold on to His vision and not look at what we see worldly! Like you, I understand, it looks familiar and it is that one thing we promised ourselves not to let happen again, BUT GOD! He promise that He will keep us. That if we believe in Him and we stand on His word and promise that He will not allow us to stump our foot on a stone. That means He will not let the devil come in and take from us as we allowed the devil to take from us previously, when we did not exercise our faith!
So fear...fear is the enemies way of letting us know we are closer than we think to the promise. The devil knows this, and when we are weak is when he slips in, thats why it is imperative that we turn to the one that promises to give us strength in our weak times. Its not your bestie, or your lover/partner/spouse...the only One that can give a true strength is GOD!
Before I went through my time of desolation, I left all that was given to me uncovered. Taking for granted that the love expressed to me was a gift that would never be taken away. IT WAS TAKEN! I am not shamed to say that I am praying for a husband, but not just any one will do! So I have opened my heart to allow God to break me and train me up in the areas in which I failed before. Some things that have come my way, it takes a minute before I understand that its DADDY and not me, and sometimes I have to humble myself and ask if I am operating in fear of the familiar. I will not leave my territory uncovered again, so that means if I need to be stretch, than stretch me Lord...as a wife the one thing I do understand, is that the weight of the relationship lays on us but not in the way that we think, thats why the bible speaks of when a man finds a wife he finds a good thing. Women we have to be strong enough and humble enough to be warriors for our men and our children. We are also expected to go into the battlefield, not just the men. We have to cover our men and children when they are beside us and when they are in the field. And we have to build a strong sense of discernment, the enemy hates marriage, if you haven't figured it out yet!

Anyhoo, I've said enough for now...GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU! AND ONE LAST THING, WOMEN IF YOU ARE PRAYING FOR A HUSBAND, LET GOD LEAD YOU, PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THE OKIE DOK! I want to give you guys my testimony and then follow-up in upcoming blogs what had transpired prior to the blessing overflowing.

It has truly been a roller coaster ride during the past couple of weeks but because I made a decision that no matter how things appeared in my carnal senses and no matter how many times I fell (messed up by fleshy thinking) I had to whole heartedly trust that God really has my back, and that there is NOTHING that happens that God doesn't know about. I relied on His unconditional love for me despite those in my life that laid out conditions or expectation on me! I had to make a decision to ignore emotional feelings and solely rely on my spiritual emotion! When things occured that were out of the box of my out of the box lifestyle, I had to catch myself in my reaction, which did at times escape me, but always while going thru continued to pray quietly so that God would interrupt if I was responding wrong or harshly. I began to relize I was becoming stronger the more and more I focused on God. Soooooo after going thru some things, and the dynamics of a relationship changing, after all that I kept my eyes stayed on HIM! Now are y'all ready for this...

On Monday, July 18, 2011 I came home to a letter from my mortgage company stating that my home was being processed into foreclosure. I knew deep in my heart that this couldn't happen. Now before I let your minds go there, I am not behind on my mortgage, I am on this payment plan that is done when you're not behind but because I didn't qualify at the time I asked for a modification because I was up to date on my mortgage, and in order to qualify in this day and time for a modification you had to be at least 3 months deliquent, so they gave me another option due to the fact that since September 9, 2009 (despite the fact that I am a real estate agent) I've been accepting unemployment after being laid off of my full time with the county. So unemployment was actually my saving grace to qualify for this program. Ok so back on Monday, so I called my mortgage company to find out why I was being processed into foreclosure and why did my house already have a property manager and a HUD number on it. I made a choice not to panic, I stayed calm, I kept my mind on God as the young lady pulled up my account. She said "Ms. Villafane, we need to get you updated, please send us your financials." She looked further into my account and said, "you're not in foreclosure!" Feeling a little relieved I explained to her the letter I received with the HUD information on it and that's when she came back said, "Ok Ms. Villafane, that's real and the 60-90 days time frame is real, however, I've seen these turn around. And I believe you're going to turn around." I took a deep breath, and said, not asked but said to God...I reminded him of the scripture He showed me the Saturday prior, and how He promised me that nothing would harm me and that I am safe under His wings because I love Him and I confess His name. On Tuesday, July 19, I began to look for all the required documents, the entire time I am holding a conversation with God and going over how things would be so different if I could just work a full time again. I kept reminding him that school for myself and my son was coming soon and I needed to know how to schedule my time out, I reminded Him of all the things I could accomplish if only I had a full time under my belt. The day progressed into night, there were some documents I couldn't find, and I slowly grew frustrated...without those doc's and no full time, I just didn't know what I was looking foward to and then I reminded myself that there's always a victory at the end. Shortly afer I said that, it was about 10 at night and my phone rang, it was my spiritual sister! I gladly picked it up because this gave me a chance to vent and not hold on to the frustration, so I answered and as she greeted me I noticed her voice was a tad bit different...I asked what was going on and y'all here is what she said..."Nichole are you ready to come back to work?"....ok pick up your bottom lip, yeah mine was on the floor as well, I asked her "C, what are you talking about?" she replied, "they want you to come back, can you start tomorrow? Now its temporary but you know how we do, and here is what their paying you, blahzy blahzy blah!""And you're full time!"....So in case y'all didn't catch that, I received the foreclosure letter on Monday and my former employer called me back to work on Tuesday, after me receiving two closing the week prior! On Wednesday I received the call from a listing agent in which I put an offer on a home for my client, our offer was accepted, we close on August 23rd. Ohhhhh and and and I made the last payment on my car, 1 debt taken care of!!!!!

YOU CAN'T TELL ME MY GOD AIN'T REAL AND NEVER ON TIME!!!! YES, IN ANOTHER BLOG I'M HERE TO TELL YA, I WENT THROUGH IT THE WEEK B4, NO JOKE! BUT BECAUSE I CONTINUED TO TURN TO HIM NO MATTER WHAT OR HOW THINGS WENT DOWN, I TOTALLY BELIEVED IN GOD AND TRUSTED HIM. I'M SO SERIOUS, EVERYDAY I WAKE UP WITH EXPECTANCY, TO EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE DAY HOLDS, RATHER ITS A BLESSING OR A CHALLENGE, IT NO LONGER MATTERS BCZ AT THE END OF IT ALL THERE'S ALWAYS VICTORY BUILDING UP HIS KINGDOM. MY HEART WOULD BE BROKEN BUT HE WOULDN'T LET ME SHED A TEAR OVER A PERSON, THAT'S HOW MUCH GOD HAS ME! AND HE HAS YOU THAT WAY TOO, IF YOU WOULD TRUST HIM WITH EVERY FIBER. NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU UNINTENTIONALLY SCREW IT UP, IF YOU STAY FOCUS ON HIM AND NOT YOU, OH MY, BUT GOD! I GOTTA SHOUT!

He may not even know his assignment but I love him for being obedient enough to be there for me when I needed him. If it never turns into a love match, he will definitely be one my best friends for life!
Anyway in saying all this and keeping in mind I’m a writer and I am sensitive about my imagination, lol (changing the words of Erykah Badu song Tyrone). We must take every experience in our life, rather good, bad or so-so and ask “What am I to learn from this?” And also “Is God preparing me for something?” Don’t worry about what you are being prepared for, that will come in its time, just do your due diligence in allowing yourself to be trained up so that you will be prepared for the out pour of blessings to come.

What if we lived in a world where everyone put it all out on the table? How would it change your world if when you first meet someone, they actually give you a choice decide rather you want to walk with them in friendship or relationship by putting things out there that may cause you to pause and think?

Would it take away the adventure of getting to know someone? Or help you not waste your time so that you can concentrate on other things until you meet those deserving to be in your life?

And would you want to know ahead of time that when you make a mistake, because you will, that that person will still see you in the same light they saw you in prior to your fatal blunder?

We spend so much time beating ourselves up for having fleshy moments or showing signs of weakness and it doesn't help to have someone that gets offended by our mistake, you're in control of your circle, so if you had the control, (which you do), to choose your circle of friends what characteristics would you choose for them to have?

Let's not worry about how the story ends but more on how the story begins, the beginning is where you are able to exercise the most control, and then you never have to worry on how your story is going to end!
